Train Show 2008

The 2008 Model Train Show was the fourth in these annual events and showed promise of being the best since the inception in 2005. Having a firm date fixed early made us feel sure that all was well but it turned out that our date of 23rd and 24th August ended up clashing with at least three other such exhibitions in other parts of Australia. Our biggest concern was the clash with the Melbourne Show, who changed their date for some unknown reason, and removed all hope of getting an interstate layout entry.

However one of the Interstate traders decided that Hobart was the best option for him and we welcomed for the fourth time Graeme Hearn of Iron Horse Hobbies. Locally McCanns Model World were in attendance for the first time as were Tiger Models, from Launeston, and the newest boy on the block, Derwent Valley Model Trains made his first appearance anywhere, other than at his shop in New Norfolk.

Having already detailed some interstate difficulties we never the less welcomed the attendance of Murray Johnstone, Bruce Ritchie and Phillip Badger all of “How To Solutions” from Victoria and NSW. They demonstrated various activities on scenery building, tree making and Brass kit building. Donna Eggerling also came with the group and demonstrated scrap booking, which while not railway related created a lot of interest.

We ended up with 23 operating layouts ranging in gauge from “Z” to “G”. We also had a static display of ‘Live Steam” locos.

Over 2500 people came through over the weekend and over $2000 was raised for the Glenorchy Lions Club charities.
